Lenovo / IBM Thinkpads and Warranty
I really like my Lenovo Thinkpad R60. After having used it for a year I can say that I really like the keyboard. After all, it also seems to
be very robust.
There is only one thing that broke: The lid that protects the PCMCIA-Slot broke of when inserting a
PCMCIA-Card for the first time. This is where my problem begins.
I thought it can’t be right if this plastic cover just brakes of when inserting a card, especially
when it’s about the Mercedes among the laptops. So I wrote an EMail to Lenovo explaining my
problem in detail. After 2 days I received an Email stating that Lenovo could only help me with my
software problem for free within the first thirty days after the purchase. Luckily, a local phone number was included too, which I called. I was
told that this problem was known and given
an RMA number. I was told to send in the laptop the way I want it, the Base cover would probably
be exchanged for free, but they would have to look at it before – of course – and check if it was
damaged by mishandling. I asked if there where any other costs and told there were not. Furthermore
I was told it would be send bacl to me for free. I also asked to be informed before any cost for me would occur.
The package arrived at Lenovo on the 5th of September. On the 18th I got an email from Lenovo,
stating that I should pay 259,24 Euros (37,85 Euros for the base cover, the rest in man hours). If I
declined the repair I would have to pay 72 Euros
for the diagnosis. So I called Lenovo and told them what I had been told in my initial call. In return
I was told that Lenvo will never repair any physical damages under warranty conditions.
So I declined the repair and I also declined to pay for the diagnosis. The notebook was send back to
me swiftly, however, I had to pay a heavy fee of 15 Euros in shipping. Interestingly, there was not
even a discussion about me not paying the diagnosis when I told them on the phone.
Over all, I really thing my next notebook will not be a Lenovo again. Under those conditions - except
for the really outstanding keyboard - I can buy a Dell and get a lot more for my money…
